How the gold score works

Open the map and every patch of ground carries a number from 0 to 100. It is tempting to read that like a percentage — “90 means a 90% chance of gold.” It does not, and the difference matters when you are deciding where to spend a Saturday.

The score is a ranking, not a promise

The number ranks ground by how much it looks like ground that has produced gold before — the rocks, the structures, the drainage, the geochemistry, the old workings nearby. A 90 says this is among the most promising ground in view. It does not say you will find gold there. No map can say that.

Read the confidence first

Every score carries a second number: how much real data sits beneath it.

A 90 on thin data is a hint. A 90 on deep data is a lead.

Two patches can both score 90 and mean very different things. One might sit on a stack of stream-sediment assays, mapped structures and nearby occurrences. The other might be a model’s best guess across a gap in the data. The confidence read is how you tell them apart — so check it before you act on the score.

What feeds the score

  • Geology — the host rocks and structures that control where gold sits
  • Occurrences — ground that has already given up gold
  • Geochemistry — stream-sediment and rock-chip assays
  • Terrain & drainage — where placer gold concentrates
  • Land access — whether you can legally dig there at all

The honest part

We built the score to be useful, not flattering. It puts the odds in your favour and shows its reasons — but it is guidance, never a guarantee. The last, best step is still yours: go and read the ground.
